The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced that Nigerians living abroad can now register births and deaths online through a secure self-service digital platform. The initiative, which took effect on July 1, replaces the paper-based registration system that has been in use since 1988.
Speaking in Benin, Edo State, NPC Federal Commissioner Dr Tony Aiyejina said the digital platform would make birth and death registration faster, more secure and more reliable. He added that existing paper records would be migrated to the new system to preserve vital records while reducing errors, duplication and fraud.
The commission said the new system would improve access to civil registration services, with health centres across Edo State already serving as registration points. NPC State Director, Mrs Agnes Ibadin, explained that registrars now work directly with healthcare providers to capture births during immunisation visits, making the process easier for families in remote communities.
The NPC urged parents, healthcare workers, traditional and religious leaders to support the initiative by ensuring births and deaths are registered promptly, noting that accurate records are essential for effective planning in healthcare, education, housing and other public services.
