The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to promoting skills acquisition and entrepreneurship as key drivers of improved welfare for military families and national development.
Represented by the Chief of Administration (Army), Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullahi, the COAS spoke at the graduation of 192 beneficiaries of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) Youth Empowerment Project in Abuja. The event also featured the inauguration of the NAOWA Delight Bakery and NAOWA Stitches and Designs Centre, aimed at creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for military families.
Shaibu encouraged the graduates to apply the ICT and fashion design skills they acquired to build successful businesses, create jobs and contribute to Nigeria’s economy. He stressed that continuous learning, innovation and resilience remain essential for long-term success and self-reliance.
NAOWA President, Dr Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, said the initiative reflects the association’s commitment to empowering military families through practical skills and entrepreneurship. Acting Rector of the NAOWA Institute of Management and Technology, Capt. Safiya Tafida, disclosed that 160 graduates completed ICT training while 32 specialised in fashion design, adding that plans are underway to launch diploma programmes and establish a garment factory to expand employment opportunities.
