The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has launched an investigation into a suspected chemical spill on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway following a truck accident that left a white foamy substance at the scene.

In a statement on Wednesday July 22, NESREA said its Kaduna State Field Office, led by State Coordinator Mr Hena Emmanuel, visited the site and met with officials of the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and community leaders as part of the ongoing investigation.

The agency said preliminary findings showed that a heavy-duty truck was involved in the crash, causing its contents to spill. Samples of the foamy substance, nearby soil and water from a surrounding stream have been collected for laboratory analysis to determine their composition and any potential environmental risks.

NESREA urged residents and road users to avoid contact with the foamy substance, nearby water sources and surrounding soil until the investigation is completed, warning that the material could pose health or environmental hazards.

The agency assured the public that it was working with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to determine the cause of the spill and assess its impact before further action is taken.
