Residents and traders at Oyingbo Market in Yaba LCDA have expressed concern over a growing heap of refuse that has taken over part of the road, obstructing traffic and disrupting business activities.
Traders said the situation was affecting sales as many customers now avoid the area because of the smell. Commercial drivers also complained that the refuse dump had reduced the width of the road and worsened traffic congestion, especially during peak hours.
Residents living nearby warned of possible health risks, including cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea and malaria, due to the increasing presence of flies, mosquitoes and rodents around the dump site.
Environmental health experts noted that prolonged accumulation of refuse could contaminate the environment, block drainage channels, increase flooding risks and create breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects and rodents.
The residents appealed to the Lagos State Government, LAWMA, Yaba LCDA and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to urgently evacuate the refuse, strengthen waste evacuation systems and enforce proper waste disposal practices to prevent a recurrence.
