Kaduna State has intensified efforts to prevent flood-related disasters as forecasts indicate the state remains at high risk during the 2026 rainy season.
The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) says it has activated emergency response teams, conducted flood risk assessments and launched public sensitisation campaigns across the state’s 23 local government areas. Community volunteers and local emergency committees are also being trained to improve early warning systems and emergency coordination.
The initiative is being supported by organisations including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Christian Aid, UNICEF, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the National Orientation Agency and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Together, they are promoting public awareness and strengthening disaster preparedness at the grassroots level.
Experts have warned that blocked drainages, poor waste disposal practices, construction on waterways and river overflows continue to increase flood risks. Residents, particularly those living near River Kaduna and other vulnerable communities, have been advised to monitor weather updates, avoid flood-prone areas and comply with official safety advisories.
With the peak of the rainy season approaching, stakeholders say proactive action and community cooperation will be critical to protecting lives, homes and livelihoods across Kaduna State.
