Listen

The Anambra State Government has arrested a 47-year-old woman, Onyinyechi Charles, over allegations of operating an illegal healthcare facility and performing surgical procedures without the required medical qualifications. The facility, located in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, has been sealed pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, said investigations by the ministry revealed that the suspect allegedly carried out caesarean sections, normal deliveries and other surgical procedures despite not being a licensed medical practitioner. He added that the facility had also been linked to reported medical complications and deaths, prompting intensified enforcement against illegal medical practice.

According to the commissioner, officials accompanied by local government authorities and security personnel, recovered surgical instruments and other medical equipment during a raid on the premises. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court, while authorities continue investigations into the alleged activities at the facility.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating quackery in the health sector, urging residents—especially expectant mothers—to seek treatment only at accredited hospitals and licensed healthcare facilities. It also encouraged the public to report suspected illegal medical centres to relevant authorities.
