Residents of Lagos State are increasingly opting for nylon raincoats over traditional umbrellas as persistent rainfall and rising living costs reshape consumer preferences across the state.
Motorcyclists, traders, schoolchildren, public servants and commuters argue that nylon raincoats offer better protection against heavy rains while being more affordable and convenient than umbrellas. Many said raincoats provide full-body coverage, are easier to carry and reduce the risk of being misplaced during daily commutes.
Some residents noted that the prices of umbrellas have risen significantly, making raincoats, priced between ₦500 and ₦3,000 depending on its variant, a more economical option.
Other residents observed that nylon raincoats, once associated mainly with manual workers, are now widely accepted across all professions. They attributed the shift to changing lifestyles, affordability and the need for practical solutions amid current economic realities.
The trend highlights how inflation and seasonal weather conditions are influencing everyday purchasing decisions, with many Lagos residents prioritising cost-effective and functional alternatives to cope with the city’s increasingly intense rainfall.
