Defence and security experts have raised concerns over the growing link between illegal mining and insecurity in parts of Nigeria, warning that criminal groups are increasingly using proceeds from mineral resources to fund violent activities.
Speaking in separate interviews, the experts said intelligence reports from states such as Zamfara, Niger and Kaduna indicate that minerals including gold, lithium and tantalum have become major sources of revenue for bandits and other armed groups. They alleged that some criminal networks now control mining sites, impose illegal levies and use mining proceeds to acquire weapons and sustain operations.
The experts called for stronger regulation of the mining sector, improved intelligence gathering, tighter border controls and closer collaboration among security agencies, mining regulators and host communities. They also advocated the creation of a comprehensive database of licensed miners and stricter enforcement against illegal operators.
The warnings come amid growing concerns about the impact of illegal mining on national security, economic development and community stability. Stakeholders say addressing the challenge will require coordinated action to protect legitimate mining activities while cutting off funding sources for criminal groups.
