The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it is working with the Anambra government to mitigate losses to residents as a result of flooding through insurance. Mr Ibarakumo Walson, the Director of NEMA in charge of South-East Region, said this in an interview in Awka on Saturday June 27.
Walson said the management of the agency had met with officials of the state government on the need for people in disaster-prone areas to get insurance against disaster losses. This insurance programme, he said, was with support from an international Non-Governmental Organization.
Walson also revealed that NEMA had commenced the national preparedness response campaign which targeted flood-prone communities. He said part of the aim was to encourage people to identify higher grounds, to begin stockpiling of relief material, and to train locals on search and rescue operations. He urged farmers not to panic into forced or premature harvest, as there was no immediate threat.
The NEMA boss finally assured that they were currently distributing relief packages from the Saudi Arabia government to 4,000 families in Anambra. “Beneficiaries are victims of last flooding and they are drawn from about seven local government areas of the state”, he said.
