Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, has called for sustained commitment to gender-friendly policies, especially as the country approached another political transition.
Okei-Odumakin made the call in a statement on Wednesday June 24 in Lagos, while reacting to Mrs Adenike Oshinowo’s emergence as the first female Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Oshinowo, a lawyer and legislative draftsman, was officially sworn in as the first female Clerk of the legislature on June 22.
Okei-Odumakin expressed optimism that Oshinowo’s tenure would improve the drafting of bills to enhance the well-being of women and girls in Lagos state. She also expressed confidence that Oshinowo’s wealth of experience would translate into impactful legislative support, particularly in the area of gender-responsive lawmaking.
While commending the speaker and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for supporting the emergence of a woman into the position, she reaffirmed the organisation’s advocacy for gender inclusive governance.
