The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Kwara State have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in the completion of the abandoned Oko-Olowo-Moro Bridge and the Ohan Bridge projects.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Ilorin on Thursday June 11, leaders of the two transport unions described the situation as a major threat to transportation, commerce, healthcare delivery, and security and justice operations in the region.
The unions recalled that the Oko-Olowo-Moro Bridge project was initiated in 2017 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari but was left uncompleted, leaving communities in Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas largely cut off from the rest of the state.
The unions also disclosed that the collapse of the Ohan River iron bridge, another key infrastructure built during the colonial era, has compounded the problem, as an improvised alternative passage across the river is not accessible during heavy rainfall.
The transport groups therefore appealed to President Tinubu, as well as the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to intervene and find a lasting solution to the transportation challenges confronting the affected communities.
