ANTI-IMMIGRATION PROTESTS CONTINUE IN SOUTH AFRICA AFTER PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

Listen

Thousands of people have taken part in anti-immigration protests in Johannesburg, South Africa, following a national address by President Cyril Ramaphosa on migration and border control.

The demonstrations, which took place in parts of Gauteng Province, saw participants calling for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and improved access to job opportunities for South African citizens. Some protest leaders also urged employers to comply with labour and immigration regulations.

Organisers of the protests called for undocumented migrants to regularise their status or leave the country, while maintaining that the movement does not support violence. Police authorities have since said they are monitoring the situation and urged that all demonstrations remain peaceful.

The protests come amid ongoing public debate in South Africa over immigration, employment, and pressure on public services.
