The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called on lawmakers to suspend consideration of the proposed Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) tax amendment bill.
According to the chamber, the bill requires wider review to fully assess its potential impact on businesses, employment, and the wider economy. It warned that the proposed changes could place additional pressure on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
ACCI noted that the non-alcoholic beverage sector supports a wide value chain, including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, transporters, and hospitality operators, many of whom could be affected by increased tax burdens.
The chamber is calling for broader stakeholder engagement before any final decision is taken and has also suggested a sugar-content-based taxation model as a more balanced alternative.
