The United Nations (UN) has called for the immediate and safe release of pupils and teachers recently abducted in Oyo and Borno states, warning that continued attacks on schools pose a serious threat to education and national development.
The appeal was made on Thursday June 4, in Abuja by the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, who condemned the abductions and the killing of two teachers during the attacks.
Fall described the incidents as a direct assault on children’s right to education and safety, stressing that schools must remain secure environments for learning rather than targets of violence.
He expressed concern over the continued captivity of the victims, noting that every effort must be made to secure their freedom and reunite them with their families. He also expressed UN’s solidarity with families, school authorities and communities affected by the recent abductions.
Fall further reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at creating safe, inclusive and violence-free learning environments across the country.
