Cassava farmers in Kebbi State are being alerted to a new and dangerous cassava mosaic virus spreading across parts of Africa.
The Central and West African Virus Epidemiology for Root and Tuber Crops (WAVE) says the virus, known as the East African Cassava Mosaic Disease-Uganda variant, has not yet been detected in Nigeria but has already been reported in some West African countries.
During a sensitisation campaign in Argungu Local Government Area, experts warned that the disease could severely affect cassava production if it enters Nigeria, which remains the world’s largest cassava producer. Farmers were encouraged to quickly report unusual symptoms seen on cassava plants.
WAVE also said it has established demonstration plots across parts of Northern Nigeria to support disease management and improve cassava productivity. The organisation stressed that early detection and rapid response remain key to preventing the spread of the virus.
