COURT JAILS FEMALE GUNRUNNER 20 YEARS OVER TERRORISM OFFENCES

Listen

A female gunrunner, Halima Haliru, has been sentenced by the Federal High Court in Abuja to 20 years imprisonment over terrorism-related offences after she admitted guilt to part of the charges filed against her.

Haliru was arrested in Plateau State by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) while allegedly in possession of 302 live rounds of 7.6 x 39mm ammunition.

Delivering judgment, Justice Hauwa Yilwa, who presided over the case stressed the gravity of terrorism offences, noting that such crimes pose a serious threat to national peace and security.

She sentenced Haliru to 20 years imprisonment on count three of the charges and one year imprisonment on count four, ordering that both terms run concurrently from the date of her arrest.

In a further directive, the court ordered that the convict be moved to a rehabilitation facility for deradicalisation after completing her prison sentence before she can be reintegrated into society.

The judge subsequently adjourned the case until July 9 for continuation of trial on the remaining counts, which the defendant denied.
