The Federal High Court in Lagos has restrained the National Broadcasting Commission from penalising stations and presenters over controversial provisions in its Broadcasting Code.
Justice Daniel Osiagor granted the interim order after a suit by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), who argued the rules threaten free speech.
The court barred NBC from issuing fines or sanctions over claims of “bias,” “bullying,” or expressing opinions—pending full hearing of the case.
SERAP and NGE hailed the ruling as a major victory for press freedom, warning that vague regulations could be used to silence critical voices ahead of 2027 elections.
The case continues on June 1, 2026.
