HOPE BEHIND BARS: FOUNDATION TO PAY WAEC FEES, TRAIN INMATES

Listen

The Barak and Jael Foundation has unveiled a nationwide plan to sponsor WAEC exams and provide vocational training for inmates across correctional centres in Nigeria.

The initiative, announced in Abuja, will see selected inmates get their West African Examinations Council fees fully covered, alongside hands-on skills in areas like tailoring, carpentry, ICT, and cosmetology.

According to the foundation, over 50 inmates have already benefited from training programmes designed to prepare them for life after incarceration.

The project, inspired by the reform-focused advocacy of Benjamin Kalu, is aimed at rehabilitation—not just punishment.

Correctional officials have welcomed the move, saying it offers inmates a real chance at education, self-reliance, and reintegration into society.

For many behind bars, this could be the second chance they’ve been waiting for.
