Diplomatic tensions are heating up as Nigeria demands answers over rising hostility toward its citizens in South Africa.
Abuja, May 2, 2026 — Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner for a high-level meeting on May 4, following reports of protests, harassment, and attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses.
Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the move is to formally express Nigeria’s “serious concern” over developments that could threaten the long-standing ties between both countries.
The government noted that recent demonstrations in parts of South Africa have fueled fears of xenophobic violence, with documented cases of Nigerians being mistreated and their businesses attacked.
Officials say the situation has sparked growing outrage back home, but urged Nigerians to remain calm while diplomatic channels are engaged.
Beyond the immediate concerns, the talks are expected to push for stronger guarantees on the safety, rights, and protection of Nigerians living in South Africa, as both nations work to prevent a repeat of past crises.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to defending its citizens abroad and maintaining stable bilateral relations.
