Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for full autonomy for tax agencies across Nigeria, saying political interference is slowing down revenue growth in many states.

Speaking at the 159th meeting of the Joint Revenue Board in Lagos, the governor praised the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) for driving record performance.

He revealed that Lagos generated about ₦1.3 trillion in 2024, with internally generated revenue now covering over 60% of the state’s budget—thanks to reforms, digital systems, and better taxpayer engagement.

Sanwo-Olu urged other states to empower revenue agencies with independence and stable leadership to boost efficiency and public trust.

Revenue officials at the meeting also described Lagos as a model for tax reform and infrastructure delivery powered by strong revenue systems.
