NO IMF SOS… FOR NOW: NIGERIA SAYS REFORMS ARE DOING THE HEAVY LIFTING

Listen

While many economies are knocking on the IMF’s door, Nigeria says, “We’re good for now.”

Nigeria has ruled out any immediate move to seek financial support from the International Monetary Fund, with Finance Minister Wale Edun insisting ongoing reforms are holding the line.

Speaking in Washington, Edun said the country is leaning on homegrown economic fixes—market-driven forex and fuel pricing—to steady the ship amid global shocks.

According to him, two years of reforms have boosted policy credibility and helped Nigeria build buffers, reducing the need for emergency borrowing.

Still, he urged faster global support for other vulnerable African economies, as talks continue around a proposed $50bn assistance package.

Nigeria isn’t asking for a bailout—at least not yet.
