FG PUSHES E-PROCUREMENT, OPENS CONTRACT BIDDING TO PHONE USERS

Listen

Soon, you may not need Abuja connections to win a federal contract — just your phone and a fair process.

The Bureau of Public Procurement says Nigeria’s long-awaited electronic procurement system is now underway, aimed at digitising how government contracts are awarded.

Director-General Adebowale Adedokun disclosed this in Abuja during a visit by the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Ali Muhammad Ali.

He said the system will allow Nigerians to bid for “low-hanging” government contracts directly from their phones, without travelling to Abuja.

According to him, project verification will involve civil society groups and traditional rulers before payments are released — to ensure accountability on the ground.

Adedokun also revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved a community-based procurement model to bring contracts closer to local economies and reduce bottlenecks.

He added that the government is working with the National Assembly to amend the Public Procurement Act to support full digital implementation.

On enforcement, he said a new debarment policy will blacklist contractors who deliver poor jobs, naming and shaming them to discourage misconduct.

Meanwhile, NAN’s Ali said government achievements need stronger publicity, noting that the agency remains a trusted national platform for authentic information.

Nigeria’s contract system may soon move from corridors of power to the palm of your hand.
