As Sudan’s war drags into year three, the UN is calling time-out not for politics, but to save lives.
With Sudan spiralling deeper into chaos, a top United Nations envoy is urging an urgent humanitarian ceasefire to let aid reach millions trapped in the conflict.
Pekka Haavisto, recently appointed by UN chief António Guterres, made the call ahead of crucial peace talks in Berlin, warning that civilians are paying the heaviest price.
His message is simple: stop the fighting — even briefly — so relief agencies can do their job.
Sudan has been locked in a brutal power struggle since April 2023 between forces loyal to Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary group led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
The result? Thousands dead, millions displaced, and what the UN now calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
Haavisto also raised alarm over the growing use of drones and other dangerous weapons, warning that the conflict is only getting more complex — and deadly.
Ahead of the Berlin conference, he has been shuttling between key players, meeting al-Burhan in Khartoum and Daglo in Nairobi, even though both leaders are expected to skip the talks.
The goal in Berlin: rally global support, refocus attention, and push for a path to peace before the situation worsens further.
without a ceasefire, aid can’t flow — and without aid, the human cost will only keep rising.
