What should have been a routine night watch in Ibafo turned tragic after a traveller ended up dead and two security guards are now in police custody as investigators piece together what really happened in the dark.
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two security guards over the alleged murder of a traveller identified as Promise in the Ibafo area.
According to police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the incident happened on April 10 around 7 p.m. after a concerned resident raised an alarm, prompting officers to rush to the scene.
Officers reportedly rescued the victim and sped him to hospital, but in a heartbreaking twist, he died on arrival. Before passing, he allegedly said he was attacked and macheted by security guards shortly after arriving in the area the previous night.
A trail of blood at the scene later helped detectives track down one suspect, while the second was picked up after further investigation. Police say efforts are ongoing to nab other possible accomplices.
The victim’s body has been deposited for autopsy at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while the case has been transferred to the State CID in Abeokuta for full investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the incident, warning against unlawful violence and stressing that “no one is above the law.” He also reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions.
Residents are meanwhile urged to stay alert and report suspicious activity via the Command’s emergency lines.
