₦7BN LIFELINE: WFP STEPS UP SUPPORT AS 35M NIGERIANS FACE HUNGER

Listen

Floods, conflict, and rising hardship — the UN is digging deeper to cushion Nigeria’s most vulnerable.

The World Food Programme has pumped about ₦7.4 billion into Nigeria’s shock-response and social protection efforts in 2025 — and it’s not slowing down.

Speaking in Abuja, Acting Country Director Serigne Loum said the funds helped deliver timely support to vulnerable communities, especially in crisis-prone areas.

Last year alone, about 70,000 people in Adamawa got early support ahead of floods — giving them a fighting chance to prepare instead of recover.

With over 35 million Nigerians facing food insecurity — mostly in the Northeast — WFP says it’s scaling up interventions to reach more people and strengthen safety nets.

Working alongside the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the agency is also pushing smarter systems — combining emergency response with long-term social protection.

The goal is to anticipate shocks, respond faster, and protect livelihoods.

According to Permanent Secretary Olubunmi Olusanya, Nigeria’s growing list of challenges — from conflict to climate disasters — makes such interventions not just useful, but essential.

In a country battling multiple crises, early action could be the difference between survival and disaster.
