HEAT WAVE BOOSTS SALES: WATER HAWKERS CASH IN AT ENUGU TRADE FAIR

Scorching temperatures are turning sachet water into hot cake—and business is booming.

Sachet water hawkers are smiling to the bank at the ongoing Enugu International Trade Fair in Enugu, as intense heat drives massive demand.

A visit to the fairground shows buyers scrambling for water under the blazing sun, with prices now at N50 per sachet—up from the previous two-for-N50 deal.

Hawkers say rising costs are behind the price hike. One seller, Emmanuel Onyema, revealed that a bag of sachet water now goes for N500, up from N350, while extra expenses like ice blocks to keep drinks cold are cutting into profits.

Despite that, business is thriving. Onyema says he sells up to 12 bags daily, while another hawker, Joy Okeke, reports doubling her sales from five to about 10 bags a day.

Even with daily earnings hitting around N10,000, Okeke noted that transport and feeding costs reduce her take-home to about N5,000.

With the fair running until March 30, the heat—and the hustle—show no signs of slowing down.
