Unions back striking FCDA workers, vow peaceful but firm protest in Abuja
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced plans for a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in Abuja, throwing their full weight behind FCDA workers on strike over unpaid salaries.
In a joint statement, NLC’s Benson Upah and TUC’s Nuhu Toro said the rally is in support of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), whose members have been on an indefinite strike since January 19, shutting down key offices including the FCTA Secretariat and FCDA.
According to the unions, the protest is meant to send a clear message that “an injury to one worker is an injury to all,” and that labour will resist intimidation and injustice. They stressed that the action will be lawful and peaceful, but sustained until workers’ demands are met.
NLC and TUC also directed all affiliates and state councils to mobilise massively, assuring workers in the FCT that they will not be abandoned in the struggle for fair treatment and welfare.
