PRIVATE SCHOOLS’ REGULATION COMPROMISED, URGENT FIX NEEDED — EXAMS ETHICS CHAIRMAN

Ike Onyechere, founding chairman of Exams Ethics Marshals International, warns that Nigeria’s oversight of private schools is severely compromised, calling for urgent reforms. Speaking at Methodist High School, Aba, he blamed unchecked private school owners, some lacking knowledge and standards for the sector’s decline, noting some schools operate in bedrooms with unqualified teachers.

Onyechere urged stronger regulation, likening education to sectors like banking that must be properly supervised, and encouraged wealthy Nigerians to invest in improving existing schools instead of establishing new, substandard ones. Highlighting the dangers of exam malpractice, he said it breeds a culture of cheating with technology also being misused, stressing collective efforts are needed to fight the problem.
