The forensic exam of Mr. Godwin Emefiele’s phone and WhatsApp chats hit a snag at Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday. A joint inspection ordered by the court didn’t happen due to disputes between prosecution and defense on how to conduct it. Emefiele and co-defendant Henry Omoile face hefty corruption charges involving billions.
Emefiele’s lawyer accused EFCC of blocking the court-ordered phone analysis twice, citing failure to grant full access to the device despite court presence. EFCC pushed back, questioning the defense expert’s methods and warning about possible data tampering.
The court sided with the defense on the importance of the forensic test, demanding EFCC submit a report within 24 hours and requiring both sides to exchange documents electronically to speed things up. Trial resumes on Oct. 8.
