OBITUARY: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF THE LATE OLUBADAN OF IBADAN, OBA AKINLOYE OWOLABI OLAKULEHIN
Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, passed away on July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. His journey from a humble village boy to the revered monarch of one of Nigeria’s largest cities is a story of resilience, dedication, and service.
Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja Village near Akanran in Oyo State, Olakulehin’s early education took him through various schools in Ibadan, culminating in vocational studies at Yaba Technical Institute and Yaba College of Technology, where he earned diplomas in building and printing.
Before ascending the throne, he served his country as a Major in the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers, commanding units across Nigeria until his retirement in 1979. Transitioning to civilian life, he became a successful businessman, founding construction and printing companies in Ibadan. Politically, he was active as a founding member of the Social Democratic Party in Oyo State and served as a member of the House of Representatives in 1992, chairing the House Committee on the Nigerian Army.
His royal journey began in 1983 when he became Mogaji of his family compound. Over four decades, he climbed the traditional chieftaincy ladder through 23 ranks, including notable titles such as Jagun Balogun and Balogun of Ibadan, before finally being crowned Olubadan in July 2024. His reign, though brief, was marked by a deep commitment to peace and the advancement of Ibadanland.
Oba Olakulehin was celebrated for his calm demeanor and steadfastness, qualities that helped him navigate the complex politics of traditional leadership. His passing marks the end of an era for Ibadan, but his legacy as a soldier, politician, businessman, and monarch will endure.
