NIGERIAN NAVY EYES PARTNERSHIPS TO BOOST LOCAL SHIPBUILDING

Vice Adm. Idi Abbas says collaboration with tech and defence firms will strengthen Nigeria’s naval capacity and homegrown shipbuilding.

The Nigerian Navy is seeking partnerships with local and international firms to expand indigenous shipbuilding and enhance naval operations, the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, announced during a meeting with Amadou Thiam of ASELSAN Nigeria Limited at Naval Headquarters in Abuja.

Abbas said the initiative aligns with the Navy’s goals of local content development, technology transfer, and sustainable capacity growth. He stressed that structured partnerships, especially through government-to-government frameworks, are key to transparency, efficiency, and national security.

Thiam confirmed ASELSAN’s readiness for long-term collaboration through joint ventures with indigenous shipyards, leveraging expertise in unmanned systems, infrared search and track systems, integrated combat solutions, and naval platform modernization. The delegation also visited Naval Dockyard Limited, where Seaward Defence Boats are under construction, highlighting synergy opportunities.

Abbas concluded that these partnerships would strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security and position the Navy for advanced operational capability.
