FARMERS HAIL FG’S APPROVAL OF 57 NEW CROP VARIETIES

Nigerian farmers say the newly approved crop varieties could boost yields, fight climate challenges, and strengthen food security nationwide.

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos chapter, has praised the Federal Government of Nigeria for approving 57 improved crop varieties aimed at increasing productivity and improving nutrition.

AFAN Lagos Chairman, Sakin Agbayewa, said the new varieties—covering staples like rice, maize, yam, soybean and plantain—are designed for early maturity, higher yields and resistance to pests and diseases.

He explained that improved seeds mean farmers can harvest more even on smaller plots, calling the move a major step toward tackling food insecurity.

Agbayewa also urged widespread awareness so farmers across the country can access the new varieties, noting that climate change, erratic rainfall and other challenges continue to affect crop production.

He added that the development shows Nigeria’s growing research capacity and called for more innovation to strengthen local agriculture.
