CLIMATE-SMART AGRIC PLAN COULD CREATE 20,000 JOBS IN ANAMBRA

Stakeholders say bamboo farming and climate-smart agriculture could unlock jobs, boost revenue and transform rural communities in Anambra.

Stakeholders in Anambra State say effective implementation of climate-smart agriculture and bamboo development could generate over 20,000 jobs for youths and significantly grow the state’s economy.

The projection was made at a sensitisation programme in Nnewi organised by the Nigeria Youth Parliament in collaboration with the Sahelian Institute for Bamboo Research and Entrepreneurial Development.

Former Agriculture Commissioner, Forster Ihejiofor, said structured investment in bamboo and climate-smart farming could transform rural economies, reduce erosion and improve food security. He outlined a 2026–2030 roadmap featuring awareness campaigns, youth demonstration farms and bamboo plantation clusters across the state.

At the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu (represented by Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji), stressed the need to attract youths into agriculture and reduce food imports.

Permanent Secretary, Ifeyinwa Uzoka, called for stronger commitment to organic farming and warned against harmful food-processing practices. Lawmaker Chibuike Obiwuzie and SIBRED Director John Ogbodo also highlighted opportunities in youth-driven bamboo entrepreneurship.

Participants were shown demonstrations of farm equipment from Honda Agro and Power Products.
