Nigeria’s poultry sector gets a boost as ABU’s research institute ramps up chick production for farmers nationwide.
The National Animal Production Research Institute at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has kicked off its 2025/2026 hatching cycle with a target of producing 25,000 chicks.
According to the university’s Public Affairs Director, Auwalu Umar, the exercise began on March 31, with over 3,000 grandparent stock chicks already hatched, including Shikabrown grandparent stock and broiler foundation stock.
The institute says the new target surpasses last year’s 17,000 chicks, reflecting efforts to meet rising national demand and support hatcheries with quality parent stock for both large-scale and smallholder poultry farmers.
Acting Executive Director, Muhammad-Rabiu Hassan, said the programme is on track and commended the support of the Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Maiha, and the Vice-Chancellor, Adamu Ahmed.
