SENIOR LAWYER URGES IGP TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGED TORTURE OF 85-YEAR-OLD

A senior lawyer has called on the police chief to probe the alleged unlawful arrest and brutal treatment of an elderly man in Abuja.

Abuja-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Godwin Ogboji, has petitioned IGP Tunji Disu to launch a full investigation into the alleged illegal arrest, detention, and torture of 85-year-old Abubakar Aliyu. The incident reportedly involved Mr. Adesoye Ezekiel and police officers acting in what Ogboji describes as “an abuse of power.”

Aliyu, employed to guard a property under dispute in court, was allegedly arrested on March 24, 2026, and held under harsh, inhumane conditions that endangered his health. The SAN claims the octogenarian, already suffering from age-related ailments, was hospitalized following the ordeal.

Ogboji is demanding accountability for all officers involved, describing the alleged abuse as a “violation of fundamental human rights” that left Aliyu “broken in body, mind, and spirit.”

The case highlights concerns over alleged misuse of state machinery and the protection of elderly citizens in sensitive property disputes.
