Nigeria’s poultry farmers aren’t rushing into the new government-approved chicken breed—they want proof it can deliver profits first.
The Lagos chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria says it will only embrace the Federal Government’s newly approved MoorBeta chicken breed if it proves to be highly productive and profitable.
Chairman Mojeed Iyiola explained that while farmers welcome the initiative by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, they need real-life performance tests before committing. The new meat-type breed was recently approved for commercialisation to boost poultry output and food security nationwide.
According to PAN, the big questions remain: Will the birds lay enough eggs? Are they healthy? Can they sustain long-term production? Farmers say they’ll run practical trials before adding MoorBeta to their flocks.
The association also warned members to be cautious of unreliable hatcheries selling low-quality chicks, stressing that poor productivity and high mortality could ruin poultry businesses.
If MoorBeta delivers strong egg production, good health and long-term profitability, poultry farmers say they’re ready to adopt it.
