TRAINING AGRO-DEALERS TO BOOST 100,000 MAIZE & SOYBEAN FARMERS

Hook: A major push to strengthen Nigeria’s food security is underway as agro-dealers get hands-on training to better support thousands of smallholder farmers.

The Sasakawa Africa Association has kicked off a major training programme for agro-dealers in Kaduna State and Niger State, targeting improved support for 100,000 maize and soybean farmers across both states.

Consultant Isaac Eni said the initiative focuses on helping agro-dealers provide farmers with quality inputs, accurate advice and safer agro-chemical handling. The two-day workshop in Zaria covers improved seed varieties, fertilisers, business skills, inventory management and record keeping.

The programme—implemented with partners and backed by Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa—aims to strengthen the entire maize and soybean value chain and bridge the knowledge gap created by a shortage of extension workers.

Officials say agro-dealers often serve as farmers’ closest advisers, meaning better-trained dealers will directly translate into higher yields, safer practices and stronger food security.

The three-year project (Sept 2025–March 2028) targets 60,000 maize farmers and 40,000 soybean farmers, with a strong inclusion focus: 50% women, 40% youths and 10% men and persons living with disabilities.
