Drama in Cross River politics as lawmakers crack down on alleged intimidation, cult links and violence.
The Cross River House of Assembly has suspended four councillors of Akpabuyo Legislative Council for 90 days over alleged gross misconduct.
Those suspended are Innocent Mbukpa, Patrick Etim, Bassey Edet and Tete Ubene.
The decision followed a petition by Emmanuel Archibong and Bassey Ekpo accusing the group of harassment, intimidation and aggressive conduct — including alleged use of cult groups to threaten colleagues and an attack on council staff on March 23 that reportedly caused injuries and property damage. The petition was presented by Deputy Leader Davies Etta.
Lawmakers, including Francis Asuquo, condemned the alleged actions, stressing the need for peaceful conflict resolution and due process. The Assembly invoked Section 14(3) of the Local Government Law to back the suspension, pending investigation by its Judiciary and Petitions Committee.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem urged public officials to uphold discipline and the rule of law as the probe continues.
