Nigeria’s forests are getting a new security boost as a specialised unit steps in to tackle banditry and kidnapping head-on.
The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has unveiled a new Counter-Terrorism Unit aimed at strengthening security in rural and forested communities.
At the inauguration in Abuja, NFSS leadership said the unit will focus on intelligence gathering, disrupting threats and supporting conventional security agencies in tackling banditry and terrorism.
The service says it now operates across all 36 states, the FCT and local government areas, providing grassroots intelligence to police, military and civil defence.
Officials stressed that collaboration remains key, noting that no single agency can handle evolving security threats alone. The new department will rely on intelligence sharing, modern technology and partnerships to improve operations.
NFSS also called for stronger support and recognition for its personnel, many of whom work in difficult conditions and have made sacrifices in the line of duty.
Communities were urged to provide timely information to help strengthen security efforts nationwide.
