A Lagos-based education initiative is pushing Nigerian students onto the global stage, using World Maths Day to build future problem-solvers in science and technology.
A consulting firm, Global Learning Advancement Network Consulting, is training students across Nigeria to compete internationally in mathematics as part of activities marking World Maths Day.
Speaking at Apostolic Faith Secondary School in Lagos, Lead Consultant Mr. Gbolahan Laniyan said the goal is to develop world-class learners who can excel in global problem-solving competitions.
World Maths Day—described as the world’s largest online maths competition—brings together students globally in live digital contests aimed at boosting numeracy and critical thinking skills.
At the Lagos training session, about 100 pupils from primary and secondary levels participated, solving live math challenges against peers around the world using computer-based platforms.
Laniyan said the programme is not limited to elite schools, stressing that every Nigerian child deserves the chance to represent the country internationally.
He also emphasised the importance of STEM education, warning that nations that ignore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics risk falling behind economically.
Teachers and school leaders praised the initiative, noting that it is helping students overcome “maths fear” while building confidence and speed in problem-solving.
Students also shared excitement about the programme, saying it has improved their performance, sharpened their thinking, and made mathematics more enjoyable.
Bottom line: Organisers say the mission is simple—turn Nigerian students into global maths contenders ready for the future.
