Women leaders in Lagos are stepping up nationwide advocacy, calling on lawmakers to fast-track a bill they say will fix long-standing gender imbalance in politics.
A coalition of women groups in Lagos has renewed calls for the passage of the Special Seats for Women Bill, urging the National Assembly to create more opportunities for women in governance.
Led by APC women leader Mrs. Bola Faola, the group submitted a petition at the constituency office of Rep. James Falekethe in Ikeja Federal Constituency, saying the push is part of a coordinated nationwide campaign.
They argue that the bill is not about favouritism but about correcting the persistent underrepresentation of women in political leadership.
According to the proposal, the bill would create additional seats exclusively for women—37 in the Senate, 37 in the House of Representatives, and extra slots in state assemblies across the country.
Faola stressed that women already play major roles in society and the economy, adding that stronger representation would improve lawmaking and deepen democracy.
She also urged female groups nationwide to stay united and consistent in advocating reforms that support inclusive governance.
Bottom line: Campaigners say more women in parliament means better balance, stronger voices, and more inclusive decision-making.
