A correctional service in Oyo State is sending a strong message to inmates and the public: hardship is real, but crime is not the solution.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Oyo State Command, has urged Nigerians to stop using poverty as justification for criminal behaviour, stressing that tough conditions should not lead to unlawful choices.
The message was delivered during a debate organised at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Agodi, Ibadan, in collaboration with rehabilitation partners focused on inmate reform and reintegration.
Assistant Controller of Corrections Adekunbi Sunday said poverty has never been—and will never be—an excuse for crime, pointing to examples of successful Nigerians who rose from humble beginnings without breaking the law.
He said the debate was designed to build critical thinking, confidence, and empathy among inmates to help them reintegrate into society as better citizens.
Rehabilitation partners also stressed the need for inmates to reflect on past decisions, avoid negative influences, and embrace opportunities for personal change.
The debate, themed “Poverty Is Not An Excuse For Crime,” ended with Team B defeating Team A by 63 points to 56.
The event also featured recognition for two NYSC corps members for their contributions to inmate education and rehabilitation efforts.
Bottom line: Officials say the goal is clear—turn inmates into reformed citizens, not repeat offenders.
