A major shake-up in Iran’s power structure as a new security chief steps in following a high-profile killing.
Iran has named Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new Secretary General of its Supreme National Security Council, days after the assassination of Ali Larijani in a reported Israeli strike.
The appointment, confirmed by a presidential decree, places the former Revolutionary Guard commander at the heart of Iran’s top decision-making body on national security.
Zolghadr, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War, has largely stayed out of the spotlight but is known for his long-standing ties to Iran’s military and political establishment.
The Supreme National Security Council plays a critical role in shaping Iran’s defence, strategic policies, and even its nuclear decisions—subject to final approval by the Supreme Leader.
His appointment comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with analysts watching closely for how Iran’s security direction may shift in the coming days.
