With rising instability in the Sahel, ECOWAS and the UN are tightening cooperation to keep West Africa on a path to peace and stability.
The Economic Community of West African States and the United Nations have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening peace and security across West Africa and the Sahel.
This came during a meeting in Abuja between ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray and Leonardo Simão.
Both sides described the engagement as a strategic push to deepen cooperation amid growing political tensions and security challenges in the region.
Touray stressed that ECOWAS remains the main platform for regional dialogue, calling for stronger preventive diplomacy and better coordination with international partners.
Simão, in turn, reaffirmed the UN’s support, stressing the need for coordinated, practical solutions that align with regional priorities.
Bottom line: Both institutions say working together is key to preventing conflict and stabilising the region.
