BETTER LIVESTOCK, BETTER ECONOMY: FG PUSHES SUSTAINABLE ANIMAL SYSTEMS

Treat animals right, grow the economy—Nigeria’s livestock future may depend on it.

Nigeria’s Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Maiha, says adopting sustainable livestock systems and improving animal welfare is key to boosting food security and economic growth.

Speaking at a conference hosted at Obafemi Awolowo University, the minister stressed that humane treatment of animals isn’t just ethical—it directly improves productivity, reduces disease risks, and strengthens global trade opportunities.

According to him, Nigeria must align with modern, science-based livestock practices that balance efficiency, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare.

He noted that the livestock sector already supports millions of Nigerians and contributes significantly to the economy—but faces challenges like climate change, environmental degradation, and market pressures.

Experts at the event, including Adetola Ajadi, also warned that poor animal care can increase disease risks, noting that many global pandemics have animal origins.

The government says it is committed to policies that promote climate-resilient farming, responsible animal husbandry, and stronger collaboration across the sector.

Bottom line: healthier animals could mean healthier people, stronger food systems, and more jobs.
