ARM AMOTEKUN NOW! ONDO LAWMAKER WARNS FG OVER RISING INSECURITY

“You can’t fight AK-47 with dane guns”—an Ondo lawmaker is sounding the alarm and demanding urgent action.

A member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olatunji Ifabiyi, is calling on the Federal Government to allow the Amotekun Corps to carry sophisticated weapons to effectively tackle insecurity across the South-West.

Speaking in a phone interview, the lawmaker said the current reality leaves Amotekun at a disadvantage, as operatives are still relying on outdated weapons like dane guns and pump-action rifles while criminals wield more lethal arms.

He stressed that Amotekun operatives have deep knowledge of local terrain, but without modern equipment, their effectiveness remains limited.

Ifabiyi, who chairs the Assembly’s Committee on Security Matters, insisted that arming the Corps properly would significantly reduce insecurity in the region.

He added that the state legislature has consistently supported security agencies and fast-tracked laws to strengthen Amotekun, urging the FG to approve the request so the Corps can better complement existing forces.

The lawmaker also praised the Federal Government’s Forest Guards initiative, noting it could help flush out criminals hiding in forest reserves if fully implemented.
