NIGERIA EMERGES AS HUB FOR MODERN URBAN DESIGN — ITALIAN AMBASSADOR

From Lagos to Abuja, Nigeria’s fast-growing cities are catching global attention for innovation, design, and bold urban transformation.

The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, says Nigeria is fast becoming one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments, powered by rapid city growth, innovation, and expanding opportunities in architecture and design.

Speaking at the inaugural Italian Design Day in Abuja, organised with the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Mengoni said Nigerian cities are increasingly embracing sustainable urban development, opening doors for better infrastructure, improved living standards, and creative design solutions.

He highlighted Italy’s long-standing global reputation in architecture and design, noting that initiatives like Italian Design Day help strengthen cultural exchange and professional collaboration beyond Europe.

According to him, both Nigeria and Italy can learn from each other as cities like Abuja and Lagos continue to expand, becoming major centres for creativity, entrepreneurship, and modern urban planning.

On her part, NIA Chairperson Yemi Shola-Adebiyi said hosting the event in Abuja for the first time gives architecture students direct access to global expertise and hands-on learning experiences.

She explained that the programme—now in its 10th edition—featured masterclasses, mentorship sessions, and direct engagement between students and visiting Italian architects.

A highlight of the event was a presentation by architects from Parasite 2.0 Studio, who explored how temporary spaces can be transformed into permanent, innovative architectural designs.

Students from institutions including the University of Abuja, Nile University, and Baze University also took part in interactive sessions, exchanging ideas with the visiting experts.

Overall, stakeholders say the collaboration is helping to shape a new generation of architects with global exposure and practical skills.
