FG’S PRISON FARM PLAN WINS PRAISE FROM LAGOS LAWYERS, BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN

Turning correctional centres into food production hubs sounds promising—but experts say execution will be everything.

Lagos lawyers and social commentators have commended the Federal Government’s plan to convert correctional centres into productive farm hubs, describing it as a bold step toward rehabilitation and national development.

The initiative, announced by the Minister of Interior, Olabunmi Tunji-Ojo, aims to use Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to transform prisons into centres for food production, skills development, and inmate reformation.

Speaking on the idea, legal practitioners in Lagos told NAN the plan is “exciting” and long overdue, especially as it could help inmates become more productive while serving time.

However, some experts raised key questions around implementation—particularly which categories of inmates would participate, whether farming would be inside or outside facilities, and how sentencing guidelines would apply.

Social critic Spurgeon Ataene noted that while the concept is strong, government must clearly define how detainees are selected and ensure the programme aligns with rehabilitation goals.

He suggested that inmates involved in plea bargains or those nearing reintegration could benefit most from the scheme, potentially even earning consideration for clemency based on performance.

Also reacting, Bayo Akinlade said the initiative is a “step in the right direction,” but stressed that success will depend on consistent implementation.

Similarly, Anthony Makolo praised the idea, noting that inmate farming is widely used globally to promote productivity and rehabilitation.

He added that if properly managed, the programme could boost Nigeria’s agricultural output through crop production, fish farming, and livestock rearing.

Still, stakeholders agree on one point: the idea is strong, but strong oversight will determine whether it becomes a success or just another policy announcement.
