REX INSURANCE, NIMET LAUNCH WEATHER-BASED COVER FOR FARMERS

Smart insurance meets real-time weather data to shield smallholder farmers from climate risks.

Rex Insurance Ltd. has teamed up with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to roll out weather index insurance, protecting farmers against droughts, floods, and irregular rainfall. The scheme uses location-specific weather data to guide planting, crop management, and automatic payouts during extreme events.

CEO Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu said the initiative blends financial protection with actionable weather intelligence, delivered through mobile-enabled extension agents—even in remote communities.

NiMet’s CEO Charles Anosike added that the program leverages measurable climate parameters to support informed planting and harvesting decisions, boosting resilience against climate variability.

The pilot, under the EU-GIZ-funded VACE programme, aims to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector, expanding insurance access and safeguarding rural livelihoods.
