After 37 miners die in Plateau, experts call for stricter oversight.
The Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has urged authorities to hold mining licence holders fully accountable for safety at their sites, following the recent death of 37 miners and hospitalization of 25 more in Kampani Zurak, Plateau.
NMGS President, Rose Ndong, stressed that licence holders must enforce safety protocols, provide equipment, and oversee artisanal miners working on their concessions. She also highlighted the dangers of abandoned mines, where gases can accumulate and pose lethal risks.
Ndong called for stronger enforcement, environmental reclamation, community involvement, and public education to prevent such tragedies, noting that organisations like Women in Mining are already raising awareness at the grassroots.
